Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Alok Ranjan said, “Vimlesh Dixit died on April 22 last year, but the family was reluctant to perform the last rites as they believed Dixit was in a coma,” he said. “I was informed by the Income Tax officials of Kanpur, who requested an inquiry into the matter.”

The CMO said that when the medical team reached his house, the family members were insisting that Vimlesh was alive and in a coma. After much persuasion, the family members allowed the health team to take the body to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, where he was declared brought dead on medical examination.

The CMO said that a three-member team of Dr. AP Gautam, Dr. Asif and Dr. Avinash has been constituted to investigate the matter and give the report at the earliest. An official said on condition of anonymity that Vimlesh’s wife used to sprinkle ‘Gangajal’ on the body every morning, as she hoped that doing so would help her come out of her ‘coma’.

The official said the family had also told their neighbors that Vimlesh was in a ‘coma’. One of the neighbors told the police, “The family members were often seen carrying oxygen cylinders home.”
