Punjab Governor Turns Down AAP Governments Demand For Special Session To Bring Confidence Motion

Punjab Governor's denial on AAP government's demand to convene special session of Vidhan Sabha for trust vote

The Governor of Punjab has withdrawn the order to convene a special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party government in the state had called a special session yesterday to hold the trust vote. According to the information, the Governor has taken this decision after legal advice. Actually, there is no provision for convening a session just for taking the trust vote. Accusing BJP of buying MLAs, the Bhagwant Mann government of Punjab had called a special session of the assembly, it wanted to take a trust vote. Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi did the same thing.

Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal has reacted sharply to this decision of the Governor. He made a tweet, “How can the governor refuse the session called by the cabinet? Then democracy is over. Two days ago the governor allowed the session, when Operation Lotus started failing and the numbers were not completed, the call came from above. Take that permission back. Today the country has a constitution on one side and Operation Lotus on the other.”

Significantly, on the lines of Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi, AAP’s Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab had decided to get the trust vote. A one-day special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly was called on 22 September for the trust vote. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann himself has given information about this by tweeting a video. By securing the trust vote, CM Mann’s intention was to prove that all the MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are united. In the Punjab Assembly elections held in February this year, AAP formed the government for the first time in the state, registering a landslide victory in 92 out of the total 117 seats in the Legislative Assembly. In 2017, the party had got 20 seats.
